Most of our older citizens will remember “Bob Lewis,’ as lie was familiarly called, the !amoits colored historian of i ho colored rare, w ho w rote and published ahook hero el it i I let I “ Light a nd Truth,”in which lie maintained that hlaek was the original color of the race, and that white men wen* of inferior stock, and not to he regarded as of much account anyway. ‘-Hob” was ^reat on ancient history, and in the naming of his children his peculiar taste of tin* “classical” was prominently apparent. lie could call over tin* roll—“ Kuclid,”Kdmonio,” “ F.uphrosie,” “Hypatia,” etc., ami each plump descendant of the “once ruling race of the world” would conic to the front with dignity and alacrity, and answer to the summons of the “paternal head.” He usedto wear his long, black, Indiany hair in ringlets, profusely greased with his “inimitable hair oil,” an artieh of hisown manufacture, and from the sale of which he seemed to deriveipiite an income. At one time lie proposed to go out as a missionary to Africa; and we believe the South lt;’ongivgationa! t ditirch in t his city rendered him some aid in the way of obtaining ail education for the foreign work, lie never carried out lii.s purpose, hut after remaining hen* for many years finally removed to itath, where lie died several years ago, leaving a family ofchildren of more than ordinary intelligence and ability.
