Jed Allan Broadway BoundFrom Star Role on LassieiBy RUTH THOMPSONTalj 6-foot-3), black-haired, virile and handsome Jed Allan would — in fact did— rolls in the dust to get the role as ‘‘Lassie’s” current co-star. But more about THAT, like anon.Right now— though — is it true that Jed and “Lassie” are (as Winchell was always saying) “Phffft?”“Well. As of now, yes. We've shot our last script. The repeats are starting.” And Jed has goneThursdayMOVIESCONTINUED11:501 Artists And Models —Head of a down-and-out advertising agency willland that big account if he can find. the right model. And discussing a possible Broadway musical. Noth with us, though, yet. Just with the producers. “Oh well • i . Imight let you say, it would be a musical. And they’re thinking of it for Fall.” He disarmsyou with a big grin. Now, it’s not that he doesn’t like the1 dog. Or vice versa. Just it’s a policy with the “Lassie” show owner, millionaireJack Wrather, and his wife Bonita Granville (the series’ coproducer) “to shake things up every few years and bring in a new cast .. . .” (These words are Bonita’s, not Jed’s. She gave them to VIEW in an earlier interview).Jed, who’s both fun and comfortable to spend time with, says he knew the series couldn't be a forever-thing for him anyway. Still he did want it for a while; always hoped they’d see fit to build up part as Forest Ranger Scott Turner. They didn’t.But meanwhile . . , back to those dusty beginnings Jed swears with'a booming laugh are true: “I did want the show I’d already had two auditions. With Jack. With Jack and BonL ta. And they liked me. Then they said, ‘Can you come back again to see if the dog likes you? The dog has to like you.... too.’So” we made a date. And when the day came I went over and rolled around the dusty play yard a friend of mine has for his female collie.” (Lassies are always male). “I reported.... and was kept waiting one, two, three hours! I panicked. And so help me I did, yes I really did, rush back to the play yard, rolled some more to renew. die scent on my sports coat.” The dog which was Lassie that year fell all over me’.”He laughs. It’s a big beautiful and younger—Dean Martin type laugh. “But it was a wonderful dog anyway .... friendly. So I don’t know if it made a difference.” That-’Las-sie” is now retired, The current one: ‘Also wonderful. And Tthink even more gentle. But you see the episode with the blind children? I found it very touching.” (Will be shown anadditional time before this cycle ends in September.)Jed plays fair. He wants you to know that in a sense there is “Only one Lassie.” At atime, he might add. Since theseries is already many genera tions old as dog's life—primetime goes, there is always a crown prince Lassie getting into the groove as stand-in ami hi! a round pa! to the reigning Lassie. But only one does the camera work in anv season's ^ ishows. And that dor works hardno plan afoot to bring him back to the series with a strengthened role. He comments; “I'don’tthink they HAVE a new castyet. His wife ’’born in the Bronx, though we met on a vacation in Miami’’ is also a happy transplant to Tarzana, -Calif. “We’re even trying to get my in-laws to move out. Wonderful people, the joy of giving to their children was what mattered. He was a working man . . . and put three kids through college.” Jed and Toby have three now also. In 1963 he co-starred in Oliver and “Barefoot in the Park. 1968 wasn’t bad either. That’s when he and Lassie got together. And even if they’re parting it’s as friends. His kids can watch the show anytime with his blessing. In fact, he’ll join ’em.
