Eons of Women In the GardenThe relationship between women and gardening in western civilization down through the ages will bt the subject of a talk by historian Susan Groag Bell Thursday at 11 a m in the Main Tneater at Canada College in Redwood City.A community service offering open to the public. Mrs. Bell s talk is entitled “Ladies In.Castle Gardens and is a version of the one she will present at the Berkshire Conference on me History of Women at Bryn Mawr College In June.Medieval manuscript illuminations, women's flower paintings of the IBth and 19th centuries and gardens designed by women arc among the art sources used by Mrs. Bell for her slide presentation. They are part of some 2,000 slide illustratiorts of western women that she and her husband have collected.A native of central Europe and educated in England, Mrs. Bell has lived tn Woodside since 1960. She holds degrees inSusan Bellhistory from the University of Santa Clara and Stanford, both acquired during what she calls her “second career.Susan Bell is currently a lecturer in the history department of the University of Santa Clara. She the author of a textbook, “Women: From the Greeks to the French Revolution. (Wadsworth Publishing Co., 1973), and a variety of scholarly articles on worn: en’s history. ;
