And the two said they didn't think it-showed disrespect for the presidency to wear the uniforms for the Cooper concert,“You have to remember that back where I come from, they respect the President, said 18 year oldAlan Fuhrman.The uniforms, ordered for the White House Guard by then President Richard Nixon, sparked a storm of derision from critics w ho contended they looked like costumes in a comic opera.The garments were stored in mothballs until Tom Roller, Iowa’s surplus property officer, bought 31, thinking some high school band might want them for uniforms.Meriden-Cleghorn’s marching band snapped them up at S10 apiece despite the efforts of Cooper, who wanted to buy them for a new touring band hewas forming.“We told him it wouldn’t be legal, Roller said. “They were government surplus and we had to sell them tlt; a government agency“1 just wanted to do something nice for my roadies. Cooper said, adding he thought the uni forms would “add some pomp to the circum stances/*So the flamboyant rock star, saying if he couldn’t have them he wanted people to see them, flew Superintendent Leland Anderson, Fuhrman and 18 vear-old Breta Oswald to the concert.Furhman and Miss Oswald picked up the uniforms Tuesday morning and spent hours sewing on brass buttons the White House buttons had been removed and tussling with gold braid loops before catching the plane for the West Coast “Turn down an offer like that? Are you kidding?” said Fuhrman. his eyes widening. The three were so pleased w ith Los Angeles they planned to extendtheir visit until Thursday.r.“They're treating us real well, Anderson said “We ve been assured no one's going to try to take the uniforms away from them.
