Sir Harold Allan’s papers:Microfilm copies given to local institutionsThe Anukad Research Centre in the United Sum, recently presented microfilm copies of the papers of Sir Harold Allan to the Institute of Jamaica, the Jamaica Archives and the University of the West Indies. The origi* nal papers are depotited at the Amistad Research Centre as a gift of the widow of SirHarold. Lady Allan.The Executive Director. Amistad Research Centre, Dr. Clifton H. Johrwon com* ranted that while his organisation was grateful for the papers, he felt that “such k vital part of the history of Jamaica should be shared with the Jamaican people, and made readily accemible to Jamaican: scholars. The. full substance of the papers is reproduced on the micro-film given to the three Jamaican repositories’*.The papers’ value life lie in the fact that they are basic documentation on the birth of Jamaica as a nation, and the life of one of its founding fathers.Sir Harold Egbert Allan played a key role in framingthe Jamaican Con dtution of 1944 and was First} elected to the Legislative Council in1935. In 1944 he 4ms elected to the first House of Representatives. and hbbied theLondon Colonialoffice forchanges in the livtig conditions in Jamaica H for betterwages, bousing ^conditions and for mote employment. He became Minister of Finacice, lender of jthe House and Flm lieutenant in the Buttamante Government.Sir Harold also served dif-fcrau arc*, in wider Caribbean affair*.
