Committee Thinks Time Ripe To Express Appreciation For Advancement of Churches In This Diocese. Leading Catholic laymen of the deanery of Mobile will give a dinner to the Rt. Rev. Thomas J. Toolen, bishop of Mobile, at the Battle House at 6:30 a. m., October 22, to announcement Friday by commit tees in charge of the celebration of the one hundredth year of existence of the diocese of Mobile. The dinner and program in honor of the bishop will ‘precede the celebration of the anniversary of the diocese, it was stated. In deciding to honor the bishop with this evidence of their regard, the laymen had in mind the celebra tion of a century of diocesan achieve ment coupled with a desire to take stock of diocesan needs for the cen tury just ahead. In this connection Bishop Toolens,in his dinner ad dress, will present a summary of suggestions for the extension of re ligious, educational and philan thropic activities during the next decade. In speaking of the spirit actuating those responsible for the plan of making Bishop Toolen their guest of honor, J. C. Van Antwerp, chairman of the dinner committee, said: “We consider this an excellent time to show the bishop our appre ciation of the things he has accom plished since coming to the diocese and to make the laymen better ac quainted with their leader.
