The mail carrier must know something she doesn’t. When Payne last checked, her com pany was closely held. Its stock doesn’t trade on any ex change. The reports, as well as peri odic calls from would-be inves tors, have reached the wrong Birtcher. Birtcher Corp., a fast-grow ing medical-technology com pany in Irvine, is another story. The company, which has caused some confusion in the local business community since its move to Orange County from El Monte in Sep tember, changed its name last week to Birtcher Medical Sys tems Inc. Birtcher Medical was looking to carve out its own identity in Orange County. Both companies were estab lished in the 1930s by brothers but have since taken far sepa rate paths. Birtcher, founded by Fayette Birtcher, has be come an important force in Southern California real es tate, developing the Pacific Design Center in Los Angeles tram office park. Fayette’s older brother, Cecil, founded Birtcher Medi cal, which for 50 years dab bled in sheet metal and medical instruments without much success before a new management and investment group took control of the busi ness three years ago and transformed it into one of the county's fastest-growing medi cal-technology companies. Although the companies are now unrelated, there was some cross investment in the early years. Fayette served on the board of what is now Birtcher Medical, according to Ron Birtcher, his son and co chairman of the real estate concern. Ron even worked as a “flunky”’ for the company during summer vacations.
