it may seem a bit early for visions of sugarplumbs, but dreams of turkey and dressing and pumpkin pie are only around the corner. With Thanksgiving only three weeks away, housewives are busy planning the holiday meal and smart shoppers ae thinking of ways to get the best buys for the big occasion Turkeys are in abundant supply this year, according to National consumer specialist Sidney Margolius. He points out that production is up eight per cent and storage supplies have increased. “But,” he adds, “you won't get much benefit from this abundance Retail prices so far this fall have been higher than last year, despite the larger sup ples with only small reduc tions expected for Thanksgiv ing. Prices are higher in this area than in the past, accord ing to Mrs Robert Schroer of Schroer Turkey Farm. As she points out “turkeys are up a little this year, but so is ever ything else”? The farm raises 19,000 turkeys each year and sells 3,200 to 4,000 for Thanks giving. In most areas, Margolius re ports, there will be a wider variety of prices and more sales this year. His investiga tions uncovered price differ ences of as much as 10 cents a pound, and the range of cost running from 48 to 75 cents for each pound. In Newark supermarkets, the average price for a turkey without any of the extras like “self-basting” and ‘“‘pre-stuff ing? is now 33 cents a pound However, it is likely that spe als closer to Thanksgiving will bring prices down as stores, use turkeys to get peo ple in for the higher prot “extras ‘But,’ Margol is sad, tur key is still a relatively reason able dinner Thanksgiving din ner for a family of four will cost about $450 to $475 for the amount of turkey used or about $1 less than a roast beef dinner What the consumer expert warns of are what he calls the tricks”” manufacturers use to ‘add cheap additional ingre dients to turkeys and chaste more” Particularly irritating to him are the self-basting tur keys Although the name of one brand would suggest it, they do not include butter In stead, they are injected with three per cent fat The fat is coconul of and water ‘for which you pay a turkey price” in theory, the “self-basters” save the housewife work How ever, according to Mrs Schroer, many turkeys have enough fat on them to make basting unnecessary For those that do not, Margobus suggests covering with alumi num, fou which eliminfates the need to baste r to add expense to lack of necessity. Manufacturers not only charge turkey price for coconut oil, they also charge more per pound for the self hosting turkey Nationally, the range 15 from five to 1st cents more, in Newark it is an additional eight cents a pound in most stores Margolius points out that ‘an all, the extra cost for a 12 pound bird could be about $120 ‘this saves you about three minutes of actual time expended So you pay for this time saving at the rate of $2480 an hour if your hus band earns less than that, due how to baste the turkey at a little lower hourly rate” ‘The other tuicked-up ver sion of turkey at a higher price” Margobus said, ‘15 the pre-stuffed kind” He ex plained that the average amount of stuffing in one of these birds is about 23 per cent of that, about half is wa ter If you buy a 1h pound pre stuffed turkey at 6 cents 4 pound, figure you are paying about $240 for the stuffing 4 ready-made packaged stuffing would cost you only about 70 cents, including the fat you add, a home-prepared bread stuffing, about 35 cents. The best buy in turkey is the large bud with no extra. They cost as much as 14 cents less per pound and yield more meat turkey under 16 pounds yields about 50 per cent roasted meat, one over 1h, closer to 45 per cent Mrs Schroer adds that larg er birds have more flavor however, as she puts out, many people cannot use a large turkey .Therefore, in this area the 10 to 14 pound bird is still the most popular for Thanksgiving dinner Shelagh Cassidy.
