This figure represents 21 per cent of the total school population. It should be notedmany students look part in more than one sport.Glimcher also pointed out that 22,MO students took part in intramural activities representing 43 per cent. A total of 67 per cent of high school students attending the 170 member schools in Manitoba took part in programs outside theactual physical education curriculum. In order to run so vast a program, approxinialety I.SOO coaches participated in school programs on a ' volunlcorbasis’* said Glimcher.Of all the sports, volleyball had the greatest particpaljon with 7.842 athletes. Track and field was second with 8,0ta competing outdoors and 1,138 indoors for a total of 7.3J3 alhietcs. Basketball came in third with a total of 6,218.★ w *•There will be a few changes In the MHSAA program for next year. The changes were made al the 16th annual meeting held in Brandon. Approximately 60 delegates from all parts of the province attended and voted on the proposahs^put forward. Some highlights of the meeting were: a Advancement of the winner of the C championships to the B championships. Schools classed as C arc those with a population of 200 or less. Schools in the B and C classes arclargely rural.in past years, the C and B championships were played on the same weekend. The B winners advanced to the Achampionships, , jNow, the championships will be held on separate weekendswith the C winner advancing to the B and the B winneradvancing to the A championships.• A motion was passed paving the way for movement to international basketball rules for high schools. The major rule changes include the length of time being increased to four to-mlnute quarters from four eight-minute quarters. The referee will not handle the ball in the back court, which will speed up the game, and the bonus penalty situation will now come into effect on the seventh foul instead of the fifth.• In the provincial cross-country running championships, the senior boys’ distance has been reduced to 5.000 metresfrom 6,000. j ,j• The site of next year’s provincial B track and fieldchampionship meet will be the University of ManitobaStadium.♦ * *Of course, no annual meeting is complete without the election of officers for the upcoming season.Returning for his fourth year as president of the MHSAA is Dr Jack Hunt of Grant Park High School. City vice-presidents are Brian McClarcn of Transcona Collegiate ami Lauren Cartwright of Kildonan East Collegiate. Rural vice-prcsidont,s are Ann SIsicr of Pinawa Collegiate and Lew Taylor of Swan Valley Regional Secondary School. Treasurer will be Gord Putiacrt of River East Collegiate while returning for another year is executive director Morris Glimcher. If \©Ay's GrgftC O0Vto«i0l«P»'2.160345q78 gCak: Yarboroogff, OlOHtKbiic.TJ9.©•rrell Wgffrlg.
