Corinne Bohrer is a real Free Spiritby EVAN LEVINE We won’t even mention the resemblance to Bewitched or Nanny and the Professor, because we’re sure it has occurred to you already. Just because Free Spirit (ABC, Sundays) features a young, : peppy nanny who happens * to be a witch and entrances divorced dad and endearing kids is no reason to jump to conclusions.Corinne Bohrer plays the title character. She’s heard it all, and she isn't worried.“I saw so many scripts where the woman is defined by her relationship -with a man,” she explains. ‘-If she’s alone, she’s depressed because she doesn’t have a boyfriend. But this was different. This woman is her own entity. I mean, 1 suppose she has to be, because she’s a witch.” She giggles, but she adds,. ‘‘This has more .. . magic than Bewitched. I mean, you can get all philosophical about it, but lately, there’s been this whole New Age thing, more of a feeling of magic in western culture.Bohrer also has very definite, bemused views on TV.First of all, understand that Bohrer is very grateful to be working in network TV. ‘‘I was one of those dreadful actresses who used to say, ‘I don’t want to get stuck in a TV series!’ ” she says, laughing a little sheepishly.“But I changed my mind. 1 guess 1 was ready.”But apparently not as ready as she thought.“My first audition was terrible,” she says. “1 was nervous about'moving and a bunch of stuff. It was especially bad because every girl in my acting class said. *1 read for Free Spirit!’ It was like someone wearing my underwear.”But since she has gotten the role, she’s not afraid to voice her many opinions about what’s good and not-so-good about TV.“I come from a large family, and families don’t look the way they do on TV,” she says assuredly. “On TV, they look so clean, and life is a little dirty. It’s too bad that it has to be so commercial, because TV is a great medium, and I think people are. ready to see real stuff.“I think TV should have guts,” she adds, sounding more like a Marine sergeant than a witch. “We have to be so careful about what we say and that we don’t offend people. It’s hard, sometimes, because there are so many people. I feel like I’m part of a great, huge machine.”Still, it’s not all cogs and gears. “I love the kids; I have a soft spot in my heart for little boys because I have four brothers myself,” she explains. “It’s nice to be in a family again.”
