DEATH OF THE RIGHT HON. LORD R1BBLESDALE. l JWe art this week under the painful necessity of announcing the demise of tbit amiable and troly patriotic Nobleman. He died on tbe 22d inst. at bis seat, Gisborne-park, ifear Skiptoo in Graven, in the 72d year of his age. Lord Ribblesdale was born the 22d of March, 1752, and married, 1789, Rebecca, daughter of Joaeph Fielding, Esq. of the kingdom of Ireland, by Elisabeth, dauf bter of Christopher Jackson, of the county of Nottingham. By this marriage bis Lordship bad issue one ton, the Honourable Thomas Lis-er (now Lord Ribblesdale), born the 23d of January, 1790, and two daughters. During the American war be raised, at his own ex pence, a regiment of horse for the use of Government, called Lister’s Light Dragoons, and afterwards, at the breaking out of the French Revolution, became Colonel of the Craven Legion of Yeomanry Cavalry, which Commission be retained to his death.* For these and other important services to his country, coupled with his. high and illustrious descent, his late Majesty raised him to the Peerage the 26th of October, 1797, by the title of Baron Rib* blesdaie. It is needless to add, that bis Lordship’s political opinions were, upon all flotations, truly in accordance with the principles of the Constitution, as settled in 1688. He was a patron of the Fine Arts, and possessed a valuable collection ef pictures at Gisberne Park, including some choice portraits, vis. one of General Lambert, and one of Oliver Cromwell, by Sir Peter Ldv, said to be taken by the Protector’s own order, with all bis singular warts and protuberances.The-possessions of this noble family upon the borders of the river which gives origin to the title, are by descent of extraordinary antiquity, having been acquired about 6 Edward II., 1312, by the marriage of John, son of Sir Themss Lister, with Isabel, daughter and heiress of John de Bolton, from which Thomas Lister, the present possessor, is the 18th in lineal descent. The above Isabel, it is belimred, also, was descended through the illustrious families of Clare, Gant, and Roumare, from the old Saxon Earls of Mercia ; William de Roumare, one of the great Norman Barona, baring, after tbr Conquest, married Lucy, sister andbeiress of Edwin, the last Earl, and thereby possessing, aa it ia quoted by Sir William Dugdsle in bis Monaaticon, “ Cravenoam, et Couplandiam, et Allerdale, et Cockeram, jure hereditario.” Gisburne Park it remarkable for a herd ef wild cattle, descendants of the indigenous breed which ence crowded the forests ef Lancashire. This species being without horns, differs from those of Lyioe, in Cheshire, and Cbillingbam Castle, in Northumberland, where alone the race is besides preserved in England. They are white, save the tips of their noses, which are black, are mischievous and insidious in approaching the object of their resentment. Mr. Lister, a connexion of Lord Rtbblesdale’s, is said to be the author of the present popular novel, Granby*—folds Intelligencer.
