ArbrgSocialWally Johannson (NDP — St. Matthews) made his maiden speech in the Legislature on August 20th during the debate on the Speech from the Throne.He stated that the Schreyer government had already begun a move to help pensioners in the battle against inflation. The drastic reduction of medicare premiums being the first step in this direction. “Corporations” he said, “can escape the effects of inflation or increased taxes by increasing the prices of their products.” He further added lhat the pensioner has no bargaining power and must live on a fixed income and this income is eaten away by inflation.Wally, the son of Gudrun and Kelly Johannson of Arborg, was born and raised in Selkirk. He received his public and high school training in Arborg, going on to the University of Manitoba w'here he obtained his B.A. and B.Ed. degrees. He then taught high school history in Riverton, Selkirk and Winnipeg schools. Wally is also active in community affairs, being amember of both the Icelandic Canadian Club and the Icelandic National League. He hasbeen active in politics since his college days.* 9fI $Donna Wopnford recently returned from a three-month tour of the British Isles and Iceland She travelled over much of the British Isles by train and friends taking her out in cars. She found the people mosit helpful and kind to travellers. Donna was able to attend the Edinburgh Festival and saw the Shakespearean play Edward II.The trip to Iceland was made on board the M.S. Gullfoss from Leillth, Scotland. She spent two weeks there visiting with relatives and friends. She then returned to London, England in time for her flight back to Detroit. Donna spent her remaining four days holiday in Arborg with her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Siggi Wopnford before returning to East Lansing, Mich, where she will continue her studies for another year at the Michigan State University.
