I. du Pone de Nemours Co. planS a $2 million plant and mine near Lawtey, Fla., to produce ilemite, the raw material for titanium metal and pigments.Construction is slated to start within the next six weeks and the schedule calls for completion early in, 1955. Builder and operator of the plant for Du Pont will be Humphreys Gold Corp. of Denver.The ilemite collected will be used jmainly as a source for snow-white pigment for paint, inks, paper and a good many other products; To collect the material, Du Pont’/will employ what it calls the “traveling lake” mining principle, the. shme one used by the firm’s ilemite plant at nearby Starke, Fla. Output, it’s reported, will be about 100,000 tons a year.The mining method uses a dredge that floats on a huge “travelling lake,” half-mile or so long and 500 feet wide, dug out of the wet, sandy soil. The dredge pick up san dinfront of the “lake,” separates out the black ore, and puts the sand back in again behind. Farm Exports Fell % in Fiscal 1952-53 To an Eight-Year LowWashington — Agriculture exports plummeted to $2,815,407,000 during the 1952-53 fiscal year, the lowest since food exports were $2,191,000,000 eight years ago in wartime 1944-45. Exports fell 31 % from last year’s record of $4,053,-030.000.At the same time non-a-gricul-tre exports, which accounted for about 80% df all commodities, increased 6% from $11,516,671,000 in 1951-52 to $12,237,362,000 last year, the highest since the $12,-300.000.000 in 1943-44. However, all exports amounted to $15,052,-769,000 during 1952-53, 3% below the previous year’s high of $15,-569.701.000.On a dollar-value basis, wheat and flour were high with $684,-157.000, about 36% under last year’s $1,072,621,000. Cotton export values fell 52% from $1,100,-000,00 Oto $571,000,000. Tobacco, valued at $284,000,000, was down 13% but corn exports,, valued at $225,000,000, were 42% higher than in 1951.52.On a quantitative basis, cotton below the previous year. Only 6.1 million bales of cotton and 3.1 million bales of linters. left the country during the 1952-53 period. Wheat an dflour exports fell from 475 million bushels to 317 million bushels, a 33% decline.
