Although he has always known he was adopted, Blake recently learned he was bom on a road and was covered with fire ants when a passerby found him near Georgetown. Just ask the Rev. Donald and Bunny Beard and their 7-year-old son, Blake.Blake was abandoned by his birth mother, minutes after being bom; along a lonely country road in Williamson County.The story might have ended tragically with the death of another abandoned baby, except for a passerby who spotted something unusual in the road. The newborn was covered with fire ants, but was otherwise in good health.Then entered the Beards, who were living in Leander at the time. They had been trying to adopt through Children’s Protective Services (CPS), which does not often place babies for adoption. This time, however, everything just fell into place.“It was a God thing,” said Mrs. Beard. “God chose us and we chose to listen to God.”As his seventh birthday approached, Blake began asking questions about his birth and the time camefor an explanation, several years earlier than the Beards had anticipated.“We were not ready for it because that was not supposed to happen until he was 16 or 17,” Mrs. Beard said. “I knew the questionsn would come after Katy (their 10-year-old daughter whose adoption in pending) came because she would talk about her real family”“I figured he knew a little bit, so I tried to tell him as much as I could in a positive manner,” added Rev. Beard, pastor of the Gatesville Family Worship Center.The explanation resulted in a visit to County Road 188 near Georgetown and a meeting with people from various agencies who were involved in the case.“I just got sick to my stomach,” Beard said about his first look at the county road. “It’s only a miracle of God that anybody found him. It was in the middle of nowhere.”The recent trip to Georgetown also attracted a lot of media attention with TV cameras and interviews for Blake and his parents.
