Awards given for safety* PrwniCaSf reports •LIMA — Several people and groups were recognized Wednesday by the Lima-Alien County Safe Community Coalition. It is the sixth year an awards banquet has been held to recognize those who promote safety and prevent injuries,The following were honored Wednesday in the following 2004 categories by the coalition:* Youth Safety: Missy Fohlman, injury prevention coordinator at Lima Memorial Hospital. She works with area schools to educate children about alcohol use and abuse, and lawn mower, bicycle and all-terrain vehicle safety.• Traffic Safety: Susan Keller and Sarah Valasek of the Ohio Department of Public Safety Liquor Control. The two work closely with local law enforcement to enforce liquor control, tobacco and gambling laws. They have worked on the ‘‘Parents who Host Lose the Most” campaign.• EMS: Denise Early of Lima-Alien County Paramedics. She is the lead instructor providing training to area agencies on CPR, automatic external defibrillation and basic first aid.• Fire Safety: Elida Fire Assistant Chief Scott Fessler and Dave Webb, deputy director of the Allen County Office of Homeland Security and Emergency Management. The two men have reorganized the Allen County Hazardous Response Team. They have led a committee of first responders in developing standard operating procedures, training requirements and other logistical needs.• Children Safety: St. Rita’sMedical Center’s Operation Band-Aid. The program teaches children what happens after an injury occurs. They learn about calling 911 and learn about EMS procedures. Children get a chance to tour the emergency room.• Engineer: Allen County Engineer Wayne Gerdeman. He has designed 361 structures and overseen the construction of 578 others, facilitating safe travel countywide on both county and township roads.• Outstanding Citizen: Perry Township Police Auxiliary. Jodi Phillips, Traci Lee and Danny Bradford formed the auxiliary and were able to raise $12,000 for the police department to purchase a Stimulated Impaired Driving Experience, used to teach drivers about the hazards of impaired driving.
