City scrip i* now at par, and contracts with the city an; now made and work performed at cash prices, and a* cheap as for individuals while a year or two hack the city was always obliged to pay from 30 to 40 per cent more than #.he regular price* on account of the depreciation of scrip. I hi* we believe is the only excuse ever made by member* of previous councils for tlc ir disregard of the public will in this matter, and it caunot certainly be made use of now when scrip is here considered the best currency aBoat.It i* acknowledged on all hand* that the location of the present apology for a market house, is entirely unsuitable, for the reason among others, of tin narrowness of the street in which it is situated. It is therefore proper for the council to consider whether the new one should be located upon the market square, or whether it would not be better for the city to purchase one or two lot* near the centre, of papula turn, for that purpose. Our “mind incline* to the latter,” not however with n view to tin* abandonment of the old market square, a* it will doubtless in a few years he suitable and valuable for a fish, hay, wood, or soiue other sort of a market thanthat at present *0 uuieli led, and forwhich we believe a better location could he found.We shall recur to this subject again, and in the mean time we hope our present aide and enterprising city council w ill take it into considerat on.
