DESERTED HER BABE.A Strange Story Told of a San AntonioAntonio Lady’s Doings inAustin.“What do you know?” responded an Austin visitor in answer to the Light man’s enquires. Not much, but an event has just occurred in our city that may interest your readers. The story as far as 1 can Rather is simply this: About six weeks ago a well dressed lady who wore a wedding ring, and whose condition indicated that she was, or ought to be married, arrived in Austin and registered at a hotel there as Mrs. Laura Mockert. of San Antonio. She remained at the hotel for several days and then she paid her bill and left. It transpired that she had made arrangementswith a colored family living on Colorado street to occupy a comfortable room and to be boarded and attended during her coming accouchement. Two weeks ago she gave birth to a fine blue-eyed girl, but from the first she manifested no maternal affection for it. Indeed it seemed to her an abhorred thing instead of being a pledge of love. On Saturday last she notified her hostels that she intended returning to San Antonio, and surprised her by saying that she intended to leave the babe. “I don’t want it,” said she, “and won’t take it home; you can have it.” At the same time she indicated that it would be supported. True to her word, the mother left the house and parted from her babe without ever a parting look or a mother’s kiss. Since she has been gone, one letter has been received from the mother, in which she promises to send some clothing The address given on the letter is 608 Commerce street, and instructions are that letters be addressed to the eare of George Mockert. As far as I can learn the woman claims to have been betrayed under a promise of marriage that she forced her father to repair her damaged reputation by marriage and that she and her husband have since separated. How far this is true I cannot say, but the babe is stiii with the colored woman, who is much attached to it, and proposes to raise it as her turn child. On inquiry in the city the Light man learned that the woman in question was not married, and is well known in this city as being the nominal wife of a certain citizen who Is now living with her and is reputed to be thelather of the deserted babe, «•»■■■ —-------
