On examination she turns out*to have complete male characteristics, and when classed with other males as an athlete, is second rate.”Step by step, Dr. Gallagher showed with his slides how over a period of 18 months with 10 different operations on a sub-normal ElPaso youth, he was able to converthim from his retarded state to a normal condition. This case was called to the surgeon’s attention when the child was born 19 years ago. At that time he told the parents that the child should undr- go an operation when he was 10 or 12 years old. The parents delayed, and the youth was not brought to Dr. Gallagher until he was 18 years old. The surgical reconstruction, tissue transplanting and skin grafting was difficult, but successful.Wants to Marry Treatment began in December, 1934, and was completed last summer,The boy is now living in Albany, N, Y», where he was sent by his parents when he fell in love with an El Paso girl and wanted to marry, Dr. Gallagher said.“It the boy ever marries, I believe he will be capable of producing children,” Dr, Gallagher said.Dr. Gallagher performed his first sex organ operation in El Paso several years ago on a 14-year-old boybrought to him from Mexico. Hedescribed the operation as entirely successful, the boy being restored, physically perfect, except for a few minor scars which show after the most perfect surgical operation.Boy Considered Girl The second operation was on a 14-year-old boy from near San Angelo, who up to that time had been considered a girl by his parents. The child was under-sized and sub-normal in every way. He looked no more than nine years of, age, Dr, Gallagher said, and was made fun of by the whole community because of his shyness, excessive even for a girl. This operation also was successful.Ho cases have come to the attention of Dr. Gallagher where female characteristics predominated, but the conversion could be effected by the same sort of operation, he declared. The cases of mistaken sex identity are the result of superficial examinations on the part of attending physicians at the lime of birth or to the ignorance of mid-wives, Dr. Gallagher said.“Proper identification is easy, and there is no excuse for a condition of tiiis kind to be of embarrassment to anyone since it can be so easily remedied when the child is10 or 12 years old,’* he said.He declared that no operation could take place before this because of the insufficient development of the organs.PARENTS OF SONMr. and Mrs. Don C.
