Mrs. Alexander.' of' Washington, D. C. is national chairman of national'legislation on birth control of the club organization'.. Her . address -was received’with-hearty applause.Mrs.' Alexander did hot mince words in her charge' .that thousands of deaths’ result every /year through ignorance on the part of. young wives,' unable to obtain competent medical advice. The speaker held-the interest: of her feminine . audience throughout her talk and urged 'them to write to Senator William H.KIng, member of the judicial .committee of the senate. This committee takes action on! the birth control’bill the first of next year.Passage of. this law, Mrs. Alexander declared, would prohibit the sale' of unsanitary and inferior products and would make it possible to obtain information and advice from physicians on the subject of birth control.17,000 DEATHS OCCUR The speaker declared that one out of every three women in this country resort to illegal operations to avoid motherhood. These cases result in 17,000 deaths each year and ‘200,000 infants are born dead or die shortly after birth as a result of efforts to avert parenthood on the part of women,- unable to obtain proper information from a reliable surce.“The United States and Chile Mrs. Alexander declared, “are the only two civilized countries prohibiting reliable and authentic teaching of birth control. Holland, through establishment of birth control clinics, has had-the lowest death rate and the highest morality scale of any nation in the world.“What the human rase needs is quality, not quantity” the speaker declared. “It is vital to cur civilization and to our women that a mother have information' which will enable her to space her children, rather than having them, forced on her as a matter of chance.“Every modern and scientific method in the breeding of pure blooded cattle is presented in our universities and colleges but when it comes to a similar desire for an understanding toward a race of healthy and intelligent children the government says ‘no’.HOMES BROKEN UP “Lack of scientific information on the subject of birth control and the .resulting fear of motherhood is the cause of mare broken homes and suffering than' any other, one thing confronting the woman in the United States today.”Bootleg traffic in birth control products is being carried on in drug stores, filling stations and beauty parlors, the speaker said, “while the government refuses to end that traffic or open the door to a sane and sensible solution of a problem that touches every married woman.”The meeting was attended by about 100 women and continued through the afternoon, following a luncheon session in Dick’s cafe. Dr. J. R. Morrell gave a talk on public health. The ses-ion was opened with an address of welcome from Mayor Harman W. Peeiy. other prominent speakers included Mrs.'G. L. Gibson state president and Mrs. Georgians Marriott, wlio gave a report on the national convention.
