By Portia E. Badham - For some persons, a birthday is just another day hardly noticed before it goes by. But for members of the Graves family of Anna polis, every year one birth date holds a very signifi cant meaning. The event marks the cel ebration of four of the Graves children, Kim Marie, Karen May, Kath erine Mary, and, Kevin Mark, the quadruplets who were born 16 years ago on Oct. 10 at Johns Hopkins hospital. The Graves quads are the most famous of mul tiple births in Maryland. The AFRO has followed them each year in photos and story since their birth in 1959. “It's fun to share the same birthday,” says Kim, tallest member of the quads. To make their 16th birth day, Mrs. Lorraine Graves mother of the four, gave the children a party last Friday at their Robinwood home and invited 20 friends. “They really enjoyed the party,” said Mrs. Graves, “since they all love to do the latest dances.”” Although they do share the mutual birthdate and are all characteristic of the sign Libra (which means they are strong-na tured, intelligent, and have great understanding and insight) their personalities and interests vary. Kevin, the lone boy of the foursome is the busi ness-minded person. He is enrolled in business prepa ratory course at Annapolis high where his siters are also students. For the past two years, Kevin has been active in the Boy Scouts and recently enjoyed a trip to the Scout Reservation in Pennsylvania He told the AFRO this about his future plans, “I would really like to go to college, but I haven’t de cided where I'll go. I'm in terested in becoming a doctor.” Katherine, the quiet member of the group, says she hopes to go to college or enlist in the Army and study nursing. Enrolled in the cosme tology course at Annapolis High, Karen plans to be come an expert hair stylist in the Annapolis area. The outgoing young lady loves basketball and wants to take swimming lessons Kim, who likes to help other poor hopes to at tend Howard University in Washington, D.C. and take nursing courses . All four youngsters are 10th graders Annapolis Se nior High, the only senor high school in the area of the state’s capital. Kevin has advanced as a top student, receiving “A's” in most of his sub jects while his sisters, Kim Karen, and Katherine are tight behind him with “B’s” in their courses. .* To most people, reading a set of quads might seem like one big headache, but Mrs. Graves who also has two sets of twins, says “it's really not a problem at all.” Although Mrs. Graves remains optimistic about rearing her family, she will face an extreme hard ship, if all four children enter college at the same time. With the rising cost of a college education, it can get expensive to just send one student through school. Anyone interested in making contributions to the future of the Graves quadruplets may write Mrs. Lorraine Graves, 1421 Bellawoot Rd., Annapolis, 4 . WHEN THEY WERE FIVE YEARS OLD, the Graves quads sported their new early winter togs for the AFRO’s continuing series of photos taken each year since birth in 1959. They are from left, Karen, Kim, Kevin and Katherine.
