Oran Follett, for over a half a century a resident of this city, died at * o'clock on Sunday afternoon, after a lung, not severely trying illness.Mr. Follett was born Sept. 1. 1AH, »nthe town of (iesham, Ontario county,;New York. His father. Frederick Fol lett, was burn in Wtndham, ConnMarch, 1701. When a lad hi* (Frederick's!father removed to Wyoming, Penn , and was living there at the time of the historically famous Wyoming massacre byIndians, on which* occasion Frederick,then a young man in his minority, was scalped, stubbed and tomahawked almost to death. He recovered, however, and later removed to Oosham, near Canandaigua, New York, where he marriedOran, the fifth of his eight children,was early apprenticed with James lBurns, a printer and book and newspaper publisher, living in Canandaigua, to learn the art of printing. One of theincidents of this period of Uin youthful!experience was a runaway and enlistment in the navy, and serving in the American fleet on Lake Ontario until the close of I he w;»r. when, being honorably discharges!, he returned to his print mg • ngagement.About the year 1310 he was sent hy Mr. Bemis to Rochester, N , to takecharge of a branch of his printing business, Early in 1321 he married and; setllelt;l in Batavia, N. Y. There he commenced the publication of the first newspaper published within the fittate west of Rochester, and named it The spirit of the Times. The paper continues to be published to the present time without change of name. In 13*23 Mr. Follett was elected to represent his election district in the Legislature of the State. At that time nominations fur thePresidency of the United State** wen;made by the Legislatures of the respective States, and in |!; senior, of 13*24Mr, Follett nominated John QuincyAdams who was subsequently elected tothat high office by the CongressionalHouse of Representatives (See sameaccount of this in Thurlow Weed’s auto-blotrranhv).
