Sandusky police honor officers, citizensFrom staff reportsSANDUSKYEarlier this month, the Sandusky Police Department gave a citizens and police recognition banquet. These people were honored:Sandy Ross was honored for her community service to the Sandusky police department and Erie County Drug Task Force. Ross has beeninstrumental in taking large amounts of narcotics off the streets of Sandusky.■ Bernell McKinney was honored for helping three young males that were being assaulted by a large group ofpeople in February.Leslie Cunningham was honored for helping the police find a person who stole someone’s purse in June and got into an automobile accident while fleeing the scene. Willie Keaton received theSPD volunteer award for putting in more than 7,500 hours at the city’s south side community police station.Thirteen citizens graduated from the Sandusky Police Citizens Academy: Charles Bango, Kathy Bango, DonnaBly. Kenneth Bly, leri Conley. Christine DeSalle. Gary Dunn,Heidi Golob, Wayne Golob, Alice Harkness, Lewis Kuhn, Linda Mitchell andWhitmanThe 2003 Reserve Office of the Year is lames Gilliam. Gilliam has been a reserveofficer for 23 years.The 2003 Dispatcher of the Year is Amy Theriault. Theriault has been with the department for six years.The 2003 Officer of theYear is Matt Dunn. Dunn has been with the department for16 years.Several awards were givent o members of SPD, includingunit citations and life savingawards:First unit citation: RichardPace, Michael Frank, WilliamScott McPeek. Paiz, Huffman, Graybill and Gardin.First life-saving awards: Ken Nixon and Jack Austin.Second life-saving awards: Dunn and JimWechter.Third life-saving awards: Paiz and James Gilliam.
