K. Perkins, and it was located In such a way ss to be plainly seen front j every passing train on the Burlington route system. The shaft, which towers to a hetghth of thirty-seven feet, can be seen from the trains as they leave West Burlington and until they have well entered the city, a distance of three miles.IEvery engineer and trainman, most of whom knew .Mr. Perkins personally, sight the shaft as they approach, and to them it brings hack memories of the railroad builder who made the Burlington route the powerful system it is. The attention of every passenger. east or west hound, is attracted to the great shaft, as up on the hill Itlooms up to a commanding helghth and by Its agency, the memory of Mr. Perkins will always live and the twomon-juments, the railroad and shaft, will al-v. ays be side by side. IVA Hand«ome Shaft.The shaft is |H*rhaps the most handsome monument ot the kind ever ciut-td in Iowa, it reach* s a height of thirty-r,even fc«t and is of gray Ha ire Vermont, granite Its weight is in excess of iL’t jMO pounds, requiring ifoundation of concrete eight feet deepand font teen feet square. Two basestones 3*’nport the shaft, the lower base stone, twelve feet square, a loti •welching 24,000 pounds. !The shaft is In five sections, the . lower -tone fcur feet square and slight-! ly tapering to the top. which lt;s thtee feet square. In order to place the stones of such enormous weight a large derrick was brought over from Chl-ttta!lt;1 t\i\cj.ro. Its beauty has at-*ti acted such far reaching nttentionthat monument builders from various parts of the state have written, requesting a copy of the plans, indicating that others will he erected in other J cities along the same lines. JWhile the monument is a handsome one in itself, It is what it stands forthat is important to Burlington. It jperpetuates the memory of a man who made this city his home for many years, during which time he was the guiding spirit in the building up of therailroad svstem w-hich he namei after this city and which has adver-1 tised Burlington far and wide. TheBurlington route means much to Bur-lington, as here are located the largest and principal shops of the system.It is gratifying to Burlington citi-, zr-ns that this monument has been placed in the cemetery.!At the elos-* of his sermon iu theHigh Street Presbyterian church, Newark. Rev. Dr. Henry K. Denltnger, for■tl r«e years the church's pastor and one i cf the best known preachers iu the, city, read his resignation. At the sarnt time he announced that he would become assistant to Rev. Dr. Appleton Grrnnls, rector of the Protestant Episcopal cthurch of the Holy Apostle.Ninth avenue and Twenty-eighthstreet, New York. The H'gh street church is in cue of the most fashicn- , able sections in Newark. In taking this step Dr. Penllnger is saving up a salary of $3,500 and a parsonage to take a place paying about $1,200. He was stationed at Bloomington, II!.. for seven years.
