George Staacks Write Interestingly ofCalifornia; Mrs. Staack Painting PlanesWriting on Nov. 11 from SouthSan Francisco, Mrs. George Staack* \who with her family moved fromIowa to California about twoyears ago, gives some interesting details of their life since arriving in that §tate. She says:“We are still living in the same place. We’re lucky as we have .a complete house to ourselves and it’s quite a problem to even find an apartment although there are a lot of defense housing projects. Several near South City, but ours is nicer and bigger.“They are enlarging the airport acrbss the bay. We can see larger hangers going up from here. It’s supposed to be the world’s largest when it’s done.“They have built a shipyard near here too. It has gone up this past year. It seems like things go up overnight here. .“George is still assistant foreman of the‘oil refinery and since he has complete charge of the tanks and pumping system he’s kept pretty busy. It isn’t hard and he really does enjoy it.“I am spray painting in an aircraft company. I’ve been there a year now. I'm working days since I went back and I have three girls helping me so it’s lots easier than the swing shift, since all I do now is paint. I had pneumonia and Was on sick leave for four months. I’m feeling fine nov as are all the family.“It’s hard to find help here now. The children all go to school by bus, They are doing fine and like it now. It keeps them busy with all the extra tilings doing.“We have chickens, now. We sell eggs for 78c per dozen. We can get plenty of meat now. Rationing doesn’t bother. In fact,i■sthings are better now because we can get most everything. Sugar is still a problem but that was before we came out. I mean making it do until the next stamps come due.“We were cut to three gallons of gas a couple of weeks ago. I get B’s because I drive to work,“I went to Santa Barbara to see Mr. and .Mrs. McKeown when they were vistihg their daughter. It’s an all-day ride on the bus from here.“The dim-out is lifted now and things are blazing with large si^ns everywhere. It’s very pretty with colored lights twinkling across the bay.“Everyone is very busy. We don’t have much time to go now since I work on Sunday quite often. Women aren’t allowed to work every Sunday, so they alternate every other .one,“We’re very well satisfied here and are glad we came. We don’t miss the cold and snow although the children thought it was funny not to have snow in the winter.“The stores are starting to put out Christmas things already. Candy is scarce here but I noticed plenty on sale as I went down to Santa Barbara.“Mr. Meyer at Redwood City is only about 20 miles south from here. If we knew his address we’d go see them. Several of the men at Fuller’s live at Redwood City and drive it every day.“We observed two minutes ofsilence at 11 o’clock, but otherwise everyone worked all day. Don’t have many holidays now but we’ll have them again soon, we hope.“Best regards to our Summer friends. George and Meta Staack and family.”i
