OLDEST TEXANHonor.CentenarianHymn Program to BeGiven in Iowa ParkIOWA PARK, Nov. 23. — In keeping with Thanksgiving, the Modern Music Club of Iowa Park will sponsor a hymn program Sunday at 4 p. m. at the First Baptist Church.The program, under the direction qt Mrs. O. E. Lockridge, will be open to the public.The 100th birthday of John Shepherd, Civil War veteran, traildriver and probably the oldestliving native Texan, was observed recently at Ardmore, Okla., where he has resided since 1941. His daughter. Mrs. C. T. Witherspoon of the Petroiia Road, and several others from this city attended.A birthday cake was a feature of the observance. Mr. and Mrs. Lee Horry, Mr. and Mrs. J. B. Boyd, Mrs. Irene Williams and Robert Henry, all of this city, accompanied Mrs. Witherspoon.A son, J. S. Shepherd of Altus, presented the centenarian a cane.Shepherd made his home here with his daughter a number of years prior to 1941.Born in 1846 in what is now Burnet County, Shepherd was in the 33rd Texas Cavalry in the war between the states. Later, as a cowhand employed by Cdl. Jack My res of Lockhart, he participated in several of the cattledrives that moved Texas longhorns to market. Some of the drives followed what is known as the Chisum, or Chisholm, trail, but Shepherd has always insisted that the name is inaccurate, as Chisum himself never followed that route.Shepherd's eyesight failed hm several years ago, but he is otherwise in good health.
