Ysaye should have chosen the “Airs Hon-gr.ots” as his final number. It ha3 been so overplayed here, and is at be3i not a selection which one cares to hear more ^n once. We could not but wish that he hau expend-ed his great artistic strength on some more serious composition.Mr. Lachaume cannot be too highly praised for his accompaniments. They had much of that same sympathetic quality which has been the charm of Mr. Nikiooh’s piano work. There was not a moment in which he was not one in feeling with his soloist.Miss Pfafflin can be claimed as a Cincinnati girl, and last night received a welcome warm enough to satisfy the most exacting of artists. Her first number was the scena and jewel song from “Faust,” and in this she had full opportunity to show the compass of her voice and her brilliancy of technique, although she was not so successful as in the group of three songs which constituted her second number. She amiably responded to the demands of an enthusiastic audience by giving two encores, the second a graceful tribute to Mr. Boex, the accompanist of the club.Of the chorus itself, the first and last selections—by Dudley Buck and Max Bruch— were those worthy of remark, and in the last they did their best work. They still give evidence of youth in lack of balance, the basses outweighing the tenors in volume. The tenors, also, too frequently dropped in pitch, and in the effort after distinct enunciation they several times exaggerated the phrasing. Their earnestness and enthusiasm, however, make up for what crudenesses remain, and promise that those will soon be overcome. Mr. Graninger should, however, guard some of the men against straining their voices, as they are at present in danger of doing. The Orpheus Club ha3 good cause to feel encouraged by the warm appreciation which has so far been accorded it by the public.
