Branam fof%xemplary service.This year, the award was named in honor of Dr. Lester Williams, who for decades was the department’s historian and honorary physician. He died in August at the age of 82.Other awards included the following:■ Medal of Valor, awarded to those who act to save a life by taking extreme personal risks, went to firefighter first class David W. Niegocki for helping residents out of a smoke-filled house.■ Medals of distinguished service, awarded for extraordinary services to the department and to public safety, went to the following:Firefighter first class Richard W. Nearhoof for his work with the department heavy-rescue technical training programs;Capt. James R. Engram for development and coordination of the heavy-rescue program;Lt. Steven E. Dubay for his work with the department’s public education program and for his community involvement.■ Outstanding Unit of the Year went to the Public Education Office and the department’s Clown and Puppet Program for outstanding performance in the field of fire- and life-safety education.■ In addition to Lee, other Citizen Life Saving Awards went to Colorado Springs Police Officer Thor Eells for providing medical assistance at the scene of a traffic accident; Steve Nelson, for his help at an apartment fire; and Matt Throgmorton for providing medical assistance to a student.A complete list of winners from Friday’s banquet appears on page D6 of today’s Gazette Telegraph.
