Nov. 14.—lt;/P»—'The man who played a principal part in the capture of Santa Anna, Mexico’s “Napoleon of the West, after the victory won oy Texas at the Battle of San Jacinto has been belatedlyhonored by .the state.Tne body of James Austin Sylvester was removed from a burialat New Orleans and placed other pioneer heroes in the cemetery here, nearly 100 after the historic encounter, located after much search-by Lew W» Kemp, chairman of centennial advisory board. Sylvester carried the only Texas at the Battle of San Jacinto color bearer for Sherman’s Ken-riflemen. It was presented to the Kentuckians by the women ofKy. and is preserved in a case on the speaker’s stand in House of Representatives.The day after the brittle Sylvester. while searching for enemies who had escaped, detected one secreted in tall grass near the ruins of a bridge. Sylvester gathered his searching party together and captured the man but did not know itwas the Mexican president and dictator.The formal surrender of Santa Anna to the wounded Gen. Hous-is strikingly depicted in a large oil painting that hangs in the main entrance to the capitol.Sylvester was bom, at Baltimore in 1857 and came to Texas in January, 1830. Although commissioned a captain he fought at San Jacinto as second sergeant and color bearer. He left Texas in 1843 and worked on the New Orleans Picayune until his death in 1882.The appointment of members of the Legislature oh the militarystaffs of the series of governors Texas has had since the first of the year, is the source of much banterin capital circles.A few were named by Governor Allred.
