November 8. the Urn white child was born In the little Vermont settlement of Readsboro. The child was a girl, Hannah Chapman. and the parents, pioneer , settlers In Hcadsboro, Throop and Deborah Chapman. The event occurred oil North hill where the hardy parents cleared the wilderness and built themselves a home. The birthof Hannah Chapman occurred one year before the town of ReAdaboro was officially organized. Her father, Throop Chapman, was one of the early selectmen of the town.Hannah Chapman lived her life In Rcadsboro. marrying. In 1804. Seth Ross who had come from his boyhood holne in Connecticut several years before to make his home hi!orzzt•ryeno-!ldHi.nt:esn-hcir-heVermont wllh his brother, JohnRoss. Hannah was the mother of seven children, two girls and five boys, before she died at the age of 38. Her husband. Seth, lived lo the ripe old age of 60, dying in Reads-boro.Of theJr children two. Samuel and Sally, died 1n their teens. Seth, Jr., became a clergyman and held pastorates in Vermont, New York state and New Hampshire. Andrew finally made his home In Binghamton and Benjamin In Syracuse. N. Y., where he became prominent In business a rut religious work. The fifth son, Joseph, spent all his days In the town of his birth. One son of 8cth Ross, Jr.. the clergyman, Charles Ross, was bom at Walpole, N. H.. but returned in his early youth to Rcnds-boro where he lived the remainder ot his life.H The descendants of the first white child born In Rcadsboro who still make their hemes In that town arc a grandson, Welcome B. Ross; two great grandchildren, Mrs. Sarah Carpenter and Myron J. Pike; three great great grandchildren, Frank S. Ross, Pcriey C. toss and Mrs. Harry Williams, ami five great great great grandchildren, Kenneth. Lillian, Harry, Irene and Roger Williams.Other ricscendents ot Hannah Chapman Ross include two grand-sons, Merritt J, Ross of West Somerville, Mass., and Myron Ross of Syracuse, N. Y.
