BURLINGTON BRICKIs the Best of Any Manufactured in Iowa or Illinois.Output of the Burlington Brick Company Kilns Leads in Competitive Tests -Far Ahead of All Other Kinds.The Granite Brick company of this city carries off the palm for the best paving brick in Iowa or Illinois. Burlington’s miles of paved' streets are consequently more durable than any other in Iowa, and the trifling extra cost of them will be more than repaid by the use which wdll be received from them.Last June the Granite Brick Co., by request, sent samples of the paving brick manufactured at the Cascade kilns to the Iowa State Agricultural college at Ames, for a competitive test with brick from different cities in this state.The result of the tests just completed show that the Burlington brick are far superior to any manufactured in Iowa, and much better than the famous Purington brick manufactured at Galesburg and extensively used in the larger cities of Illinois and Iowa.The result of the tests is given in the following report of the superintendent of the college to the Granite Brick Co.:“Taking all tests into consideration, thing we can safely say your brick have the best qualities of any brick tested. According to recommendation of committee, which we followed, (found in Civil Engineers’ News, May 4, 1897) most reliance is to be placed upon “rattler” test. In this test your brick ranked highest (1). The other tests agreed quite closeiy with this test”The only comparative table of tests received is the “rattler” tests,” which are conducted as follows:Twenty-five brick are charged and kept fifty-seven minutes in the rattler; the ctiarge is turned 1,800 revolutions at an average rate of 31.3 revolutions per minute, and each charge was 15 per cent of the volume of the rattler. The result of the different brick was as follows:Des Moines. Ia.. average per centof loss .......................30.97Holman, la., average per cent ofloss .........................38.14Fort Dodge, la., average per centof loss .......................25.11Purington, Galesburg, 111., average per cent of loss...........24.21Burlintgon, la., average per centof loss .......................18.54This table shows that the Burlington brick in the test of wear and tear is 25 per cent better than the next best made in this part of the country—the Purington brick.In the “crushing” and “absorption of water” test the Burlington brick held its own with all the other samples submitted and the result was the same as the United States government tests made in 1889 at Rock Island.The Granite Brick Co. is to be congratulated on the result, as well as the city of Burlington in using altogether this brick for paving purposes.
