Crown Point, the Gretna Green of Indiana until yesterday, is staggering from the heavy blow which Circuit Judge T. Joseph Sullivan directed at the marriage ltcense business with his injunction against issuance of licenses to non-resident women. The city figures it will lose at least a quarter of million dollars a year if Judge Sullivan's injunction sticks. This loss will be suffered by hotels, garages, restaurants, filling stations, taverns, the telephone company arid the telegraph company. In addition, the county government will have to do without about $36,000 in license fees every year, which represents almost 1 cent on the county levy.County ..Clerk George W. Sweigart, against whom the injunction was directed, had nothing to say today. , He, merely ordered hfs clerks .to comply with the order until, the Indiana Supreme court can rhle on his appeal.Unaware of the blighting injunction, about 60* out-of-state couples were waiting at the door of the county clerkV-office this morning to seek marriage licenses. They came from Chicago, Wisconsin, Michigan, Washington, D. C., NewYork, and Pittsburgh.Clerks had to refuse them licenses under the provisions of Judge Sullivan's restraining order.Another effect of the injunction will be to close the clwk's office at 12 o'clock noon* today for the first time In Almost 30 years. * Y-*While all thestr'adverse* devetoj» meats were . materialising, Clerk Sweigart was rushing his Supreme court appeal. He posted an appeal bond of $1500, which Raymond Rudolph', manager of the Crown Point Telephone company, as surety. Court clerks now are hurrying completion of the transcript so that Sweigart may enter his appeal the forepart of next week. With the injunction in effect until the* Supreme court’s ruifng, Crown Point's lucrative Gretna Green business comes to a stop for the first time in 30 years. It began when Ernest Shortridge became county clerk. Shortridge cooperated with Justice of the Peace Harry B. Nicholson to advertise the marrying advantages of the county seat.Shortridge remained in office until IMS and during his eight-year regime, he developed the marriage license department of his office so carefully that he laid the foundation upon which' thfe business * * has flourished since then..It wras Shortridge 'who succeeded in winning the'interpretation that the IS52 law did not apply to out-of-town women,* This interpretation prevailed until Judge Sullivan returned his historic ruling yesterday, upholding the validity of the 85-year-old act as applying to all women not residents cf Lake county.PRESIDENT’S woman driverBy HAKOLtUnited Press SPARIS.
