Urge CitizensVote 'Yes’ OnSay System Would Give Citizens a Voice in Their City Government!(This is the final article in a series prepared by the Committee for Representative Government, which is supporting a proposal to return to the mayor-al-derman form of city government here. Voters will decide the issue in Tuesday's election.—EDITOR’S NOTE).The League of Women voters of I Madison have promoted the city manager system with half-truths and perversions on the truth all through their propaganda.The committee for Representative Government has exposed and refuted their statements and claims, but they come back with more. They have circulated a. handbill which states that if you; vote as they direct you to, the, council will act to enlarge, itself! and beeome representative. ITn further fool the public, four; of the “rubber stamps pledge themselves to vote to make a. change in the makeup of the coun-' til. Now. the league says to itself., voters will be fooled into voting1 as we. direct. ;But voters do not forget the:facts. _ IIn the spring election of 1949J Garner and Saehtjen pledged themselves, if they were elected, to vote for the manager vs. mayor referendum. After election they again so pledged themselves, but when it came up, they both voted; against it! jReynolds, at the special session; of the council where the present, referendum' (petitioned fori was, introduced asked the city attorney; how to thwart the will of. the peo-j pie bv legal means. When told.i how, he made that motion, but noj one seconded it. Then when he: voted, he voted for it. iSchenk is an unknown element.! He made no campaign promises,; he kept his hands free.Saehtjen (Oct. 31, 1950) is theone who suggested that the council change the ordinance which gives a right to petition. Do you think this shows a belief in democratic action? !Remember their bibl.e. the city;manager’s handbook put out by; the Citv Manager association.; states that the good of their sys-j trm is lost if there is a large council.The city manager plan is not a growing tiling. Merrill, Monroe., Aniiso. and Evansville recently! turned it down. Rhinelander after 25 vears threw the manager out. Stevens Point after 18 years threw j the manager out. Beloit kept theirs: bv a large majority of 150 votes.‘Vote “yes” on the charter ordinance and bring back your right to have your say in city government. Vote “yes” and protect your right to own property. Vote “yes and stop a few people from running vour city and you. Vote “yes and'fight to keep democracy alive.;
