50 years of inteLizzette Romero IStaff Reporter ^rationLizzette RomeroStaff ReporterMabel Butler Hill, 67, remembers being a student at Texas Western College 50 years ago when another student approached her and told her that she was really glad to see her there.Back in September 1955, Hill was one of the first 12 black students ever to attend the college, now known as UTEP.“In my experience, it was a really peaceful and quiet integration,’5 Hill said.Texas Western College was the first state college in Texas to initiate the process of integration. In honor of this historical event, UTEP will host the “50th Anniversary Conference and Celebration of the Desegregation of Texas Western College (UTEP)’5 on Nov. 3-4 at the Union.“Students should attend this event to learn a little bit more about the African American background, the history and the progress,’5 sophomore communication studies major Leticia Graham said.
