CUTTING- AFFRAY.During the closing exercises of the Academy here, a number ot mountain youths well filled’with mountain dew camem the hall and commenced to make a dis-«»turbance. Mr. Guy Bishop kindly and very politely requested them not to be so noisy, as. they were disturbing the audience. They replied with oaths and curses, to which Mr. Bishop made no reply, and the parties left the hall just before the close of the exhibition. Mr. Bishop and Mr. W. H. Kemper left the hall together to go home. Tom Raines, a son of Henry Raines, with a cousin saw Mr. Bishop, and still angry at the rebuke given in the hall made an insulting remark, whereupon Mr. r Bishop quietly knocked him down and walked off. Rains hunted up bis crowd, overtook Messrs. Bishop and Kemper, and running up behind the former knocked him down and jumped on him. * Mr. Kemper, son of Capt. Mark Kemper, jerked Raines off ofBishop, when three or four of the crowd with rocks and razors held Kemper off, whilst the rest made for Bishop. He warned them to keep off or ho would cut them* Tom Raines rushed in, grabbed Bishop and downed him, but in the scuffle was severely cut.in the side, hip andshoulder,.and his throat cut barely missing the wind pipe. Had not Bishop’s knife broken Raines would undoubtedly have been killed. As it was, he was severely, but not fatally cut. Port at one time had the name of being the headquarters of all the fighters in the country, but of late yearsit hag considerably quieted down. The traditions of former fights has undoubtedly fired the imagination of the younger generation of mountaineers, winy are anxious to see “the'days of theilr^addies,, rehabilitated, but it won’t do. Tempora rautantur, c., e., and we hereby warn these parties such proceedings will no 'longer be tolerated. If they wish to fight they must keep in the mountains and do their fighting tLere. The old days when Pori: was the theatre of knock-down-and drag out fisticuffs at every gathering is past and gone, and the young pugilist who is anxious to show his manhood will find himself behind the bars of the county jail if he tries it in Port.
