In 1971 there were 66,300 registered births, last year there were 57,500. It has been a steady decline except for the years 1979 and 1981An examination of the Demographic Statistics 1984 tabled in the House of Representatives on Thursdav shows rhai there has been a decline in the rate at which all women arc having children.According to the document the greatest reduction was in the 45-49 age group with S7 7 per cent Ir nores that with the exception of the 15-19 age group where the decline was 28 1 per cent the other age groups recorder! a decrease of more than 41 per cent in the rate at which they bore childrenin 1982.“The total fertility rate of 3.3 children showed that this measure of average completed family size has declined by 40 per cent since 1970,” the Demographic Statistics 1984 states.Women in the 20-24 age group had the highest rates, followed by those in the 25-29 with those in he 15-19 age group having a rate of 20 percent less than the 25-29 age group.St. Andrew women had the lowest total fertility rate with 2.7 children while Clarendon had the highest at 3 8 children.Since 1970 there has also been a decline in the number of registered deaths but the decline has not been consistent there being fluctanoasdunngthe period up to last year.In 1984 there were 13,400 deaths romp in d reflected a crude death rate of 5.9 in 19X4 ,i, , i,“The available data on infant deaths uhIk m rh of 12 per 1,000 live b’irths obtained m 198' ,irvi t? 13 per 1,000,” the document states.It adds: “It should be home in mind inr ■* important strides in the improvement of he iltL, morality to levels comparabU to vch.it obtain- n the registration of infant deaths h.v- not be , ct •• late 1970s.”
