fling•rty*ocls(willtoysluni-dis-(willi di-eply the rin-hich isful lect-/•six : the kers isingand later I will lip.iring 1 theport.Governor To Give Resolution Of Praise To South High BandGovernor Millard Tiwes will present th* South Hagerstown High School Band with a resolution today in Annapolis congratulating It on its performance in the Inaugural Parade.The'resolution, passed by the State Legislature on Jan. 25, 1961congratulates (he South High Band for achieving second place in Ihe Musical Band Division.The Johns Hopkins University “Pershing Rifles,0 and R.O.T.C. drill team, achieved special mention in the inarching units division of Hie Presidential Inaugural Parade.“The Stale of Maryland was highly honored by these successes, noted the legislature.The South High Band, directed by Klwood E. Kinney, is composed of 132 members, including 1JC musicians, a drum major, 13 majorettes, six members of the color guard, and two banner carriers.During tlic' regular schuol year, it performs at all the school's football games, local parades of importance and such other events as approved by the Washington County Board of Education.in the 1961 Inaugural Parade, competing with leading univer. sitles and college band*, the South High Band placed second to Virginia Polytechnic Inati-tutc, with the University of Texas Band taking special mention, or third place. As South High previously won the national championship in Ihe 1960 A.A.A. Safety Patrol Parade in Washington, D. C\, the award won in the inaugural Parade places it in the top spot among the nation’s high school hands.Among the other recent accomplishments of the South High Band were performing for the Baltimore Colts in Baltimore Memorial Stadium, ratedas one of the best performances ever given in the stadium; .performing in Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade, giving severalspecial performances by request of parade officials; and being Honor Band in the 19GI Cherry Blossom Parade, leading the first division and performing prior to Ihe parade for 35 mindies before the reviewing stand. The band was not in competition in the latter parade.
