After seven sonsArea couple’s first daughter arrives by special deliveryBy CAROL DONATOT R Staff WriterMel Peters of RD 1, Uhrichsville, a veteran teacher at Claymont Junior High in Dennison, feels he’s just completed his education.Peters, who has combined his duties as teacher and high school wrestling coach with operating a farm on Rt. 800 near Dennison, has helped deliver colts and cattle. But Saturday night, he presided at the birth of his eighth child — a daughter — in the cab of his pickup truck.What makes the event a really special delivery for Mel and his wife, the former Terri Patterson of Dennison, is the fact that this is the couple’s first daughter. They already have seven sons, ranging in age from 18-year-old Scott, who is one of Clay-mont’s tri-valedictorians this year, to 19-month-old Elliott.“IT WAS KIND of wild,’’ Peters said thismorning, adding that he had told his wife while shewas pregnant that he had no intention of being in the hospital delivery room with her when the baby wasborn.“I live on a farm and just delivered a colt Thursday at noon, but I’ve never been in the hospital delivery room,’’ he said. “I said I wasn’t going in with this one either.”He said his wife woke up at about 10:30 Saturday night in the late stages of labor. ‘‘Her other deliveries had gone very quickly, so we knew we didn’t have much time,” he said. Peters called her doctor. Dr. Efrain Padro, and advised him that he should meet them at Union Hospital.The Peters were enroute to the Dover hospital in the farm pickup truck when Terri assured him that they weren’t going to make it in time. ‘‘My wife is very experienced at this,” Mel said.They stopped shortly before 11 in Schoenbrunn where Mel assisted his first daughter, BrittanySee IT’S A GIRL ...,A-3
