War Hawks ClaimANDALUSIA — Calhoun Community College’s baseball War Hawks are the 1974 Alabama Junior College (AJC) state champions.Coach Fred Frickie's War Hawks edged Jefferson State of Birmingham, 6-5 here Friday afternoon to claim the coveted crown after Jef ferson State had defeated Calhoun, 8-6 in Friday’s opener to set up a one-game showdown for the title.THE WAR HAWKS scored 3 runs in the first inning, 1 in the fifth and 2 in the sixth in the championship game, offsetting single runs in the first and fourth innings and 3 in the eighth by Jefferson State.The victory advances Calhoun to next week’s southeastern regional tournament in Georgia, The War Hawks’ opening opponent in Georgia is as yet undetermined.CrownCalhoun finished the season with a misleading 16-18 overall won-lost record, but as Frickie said following Friday’s victory, “It was just a great team effort. From the bench on down, everyone contributed Everyone started producing, offensively and defensively at the right time. ”And, Calhoun pitching coach ‘Red’ Coman concurred with Frickie. “All the players responded down here. They got it together when they had to, and the credit should go to Fred.
