CAPT. JOHN AYRESWAS WELL LIKEDOld Comrade Corrupts Mistaken Impression Concerning Him—Stationed at Santa Fe.The New Mexican is in receipt of a letter from Captain George H. Pettis, of Providence, Rhode Island, who was for many years a resident of New Mexico, in which the Captain corrects a mistaken impression concerning the late Captain John Ayres who died sometime since at the City of Mexico. The letter being of interest it is republished. It reads:Colonel Max. Frost, Managing EditorNew Mexican, San'ta Fe, N. M.My Dear Colonel:—In the New Mexican Review of the 21st instant is an article “Concerning the late Captain John Avres,” in which it is stated that he “came to New Mexico with what was called the ‘California Column* in 1862, us a lieutenant.” This is a mistake. He came with the “Column” as a private in Captain Nathaniel J. Pishon’s Company D, First California Cavalry. He was for a long time an attache at head-quarters atSanta Fe, tile general commanding—General James H. Carleton—being a great friend of his. 1 think that in 1864 he received a commission in oneof the New Mexican regiments.
