WEDNESDAY EVENING, MAY 2, 1928*TIME TO SPRAY PEACH ORCHAROMarsH -Urges' Control Twig Borer And AphisofLeroy Marsh, Weber county agricultural inspector, issued the following: statement today; After a careful survey of the peach orchards of Weber county, it has been decided to begin to spray for the control- of the peach twig borer May 4. This date has been decided- on, after a most thorough survey Of the various altitudes ■ of the .courfty .as well as those locations that would be earliest and latest. . Those that are familiar with the habits of this insect can. by careful investigation note, here and there little holes in the leaves and occasionally the tins of some leaves tied together. FEEDING ON LEAVESThis indicates that the borer is feeding on the leaves and secreting itself in the tied clusters awaiting the time when the twig shall have advanced from 1 Vz to 2 inches in length, when they will enter the inside of the twig and remain until they have completed . their larval growth. It will be seen that there is one certain period of time for the successful application or the poison which is between the time when the leaves have advanced lt;.o the stage where they begin to tie them together and when too blossoms have fallen until the -time when they enter the twig, which will be approximately one week.Every grower should have his spray outfit ready to start promptly on time, using four pounds or arsenate of lead per 100 gallons or water with good high pressure and see to it that every leaf on the tree is thoroughly protected with thepoison. , ,Another Question has arisen in connection with this spray for the twig borer and that is the combined control of the peach aphis, which was present in sufficient numbers last year to be a commercial fae.or because these aphids entering on the inside of the blossom .as well as on the outside sucking the juices therefrom and causing the blossoms to fall off to the extent that the crons on some trees was practically destroyed,LOOK TREES OVERIt is not my purpose to make a general recommendation for the use of an insecticide for the control of the aphis, but each grower should look his trees over very carefully and if he finds that they are infested with the aphis the following formula will give control: One pint of black leaf 40 to each 100 gallons of water applied in connection with tho arsenate of lead as stated above. Let me call the attention of the growers to the fact that the United States standardized grades of peaches as wed as the Utah food law forbids the use of borer' infested fruit hence, the fruit that is not clean is a total loss.As to the effectiveness of the above control measures, it is with pride that I point to the success of the growers of North Ogden, who have been able to reduce the losses from peach twig borer to less than 2 per cent by the above formula, ,, . , ,Any assistance that the district agricultural inspector’s office can render will be gladly given.cRahd c V-f RESugpcr Thursday—Mrs, H.
