Lady Redbirds win conference track title with strong effortIt didn’t matter that there were only four teams in the Big Seven Conference Junior High Track Meet Wednesday at Taylor Field.Even if three more teams would have been there, it’s quite unlikely anyone could have beatean the Malan Junior High Lady Redbirds.With many of their times being better than the high school girls, the Redbirds simply outclassed the other three teams in the meet.Malan ended up with 74 points while Marion had 49, Carbondale 28 and Benton 27.The Redbirds posted six first places in the meet to go with six second places.Two of the six wins came from relay teams. The 880-yard relay team of Linda Walker, Missy Wentzel, April Duncan and Carla Shelton took first in 1:56 and that time is better than those of most high school teams in. the area.The 440-yard rtlay team of Duncan, Desiree Rtdierson, Kim Miller and Hope Walker won in a 55.7 which also compares to high school times.Malan did exceptionally well in the field events, racking up 28 of their points in the field.Cindy Simpson won the shotput with a heave of 28-4 while in the long jump, Linda Walker was first with a leap of 15-0,In the sprints, the Redbirds got a fine win from Carla Shelton in the 220-yard dash as she crossed the tape in a good time of 28.8.In the 440-yard dash, Amy Rice was the winner in 68.2.Winning second places were Carla Shelton in the high jump, Mary Pickford in the shotput, Carla Shelton in the long jump, Desiree Richerson in the hurdles, Hope Walker in the eighth grade 100-yard dash and Kristie Miller in the seventh grade 100.Third places came from Lisa Potter in the quarter, Linda Walker in the low hurdles and Kim Miller in the high jump.Marion won the championship last year while Malan placed second.“We had some of our best timesand distances of the season, said Malan coach Betty Eichom.“We were really well-balanced in our points. We had strength in almost every event.“Amy Rice had her best time in the 440, Lisa Potter had her best in the 440, Cindy Simpson had her best in the shot and the 880-yard relay team had its season’s best,” Eichom added.The Lady Redbirds will be in the Carbondale Invitational today before hosting Eldorado in a boys’ and girls’ meet Friday at Taylor Field.
