L Baldwin* of this city, while in Chicago handed the late Joseph Medill a copy of The Independent containing a sketch of the life of the famous editor of the Chicago Tribune. Subsequently Mr. Medill wrote the letter which is given below, and which will be found self-explanatory. At the time the letter was received a copy was made and given to R. P. Skinner, then editor of The Independent. When Mr. MedilPs death was announced an unsuccessful attempt was made to find this copy, the existence of which wa9 known. Mr. Baldwin was then not m the city. Immediately upon his return he furnished The Independent with the original:The sale of the real estate of the late Richard Powell was conducted Saturday morning. Administrator L. A. Koons.sr-being in charge. Turenne Getz was the auctioneer, and L. A. Kooos, jr., the clerk. The Main street property, the first building east of the canal on the south side, which was owned jointly by Mr. Powell and the heirs of the late Abel James, was sold as a whole to Frederick Hess for SG.OOO.Joseph Schneider bought the Major saloon building, in Exchange street, for $1,750.Mrs. Martha Powell, widow of Richard Potfell, purchased the two vacant West Cherry street lots for $1,300The Akron street house and lot went to Mrs!
