Rail Garrison Said Exciting Prospect'(Continued from Page 1)McIIvoy noted, however, that he had been assured the cost of this bridge was not nearly so much as other bases would have to spend to purchase land. The proposed garrison site was a landfill in the 1940s. While McIIvoy anticipated no problems with refuse buried there, it is a factor being considered. The track would cross a former Indian burial ground and there was some question about maintaining the integrity of that site. There might be problems with the Arkansas Archaeological Survey. An alternate plan called for the purchase of a few acres of land further north. In such an event, both the garrison and the railroad spur would be further north and the burial ground would not be touched.McIIvoy noted that House Armed Services Committee Chairman Les Aspin has recently come out in favor of the smaller ‘“Midgetman ” missile rather than the Peacekeeper. A Midgetman has one warhead. General Larry D. Welch, USAF’s chief of staff, saidMcIIvoy, is squarely behind the Peacekeeper. McIIvoy noted the recent protest demonstrations in Wyoming, where there is another base that is a candidate for the Peacekeeper. Responding in the Air Force Times recently to the allegation that the American people don't want the Paeacekeeper, Welch noted the support the project had received in Blytheville and other areas.Blytheville C of C’s Armed Services Committee Chairman Harold Sudbury also reminded members about the public impact scoping meeting at the Ritz Civic Center on April 11. He wanted to see that meeting packed, he said. Chamber Executive Vice President Jerry Bohannon was to go today to a Malstrom AFB scoping meeting. Prior to the meeting in Blytheville, he will also attend other such meetings to learn what sort of questions are being asked and how to address them. A Mississippi County’s Mayors Association meeting will also take place before the Ritz scoping gathering.
