Register photo — TERRY REIMEROfficer Helen Prosowski6JBy MICHAEL THRONEStaff Writer mm SANDUSKY - The first fulltime female officer in the history of the Sandusky police department has been tabbed as the department’s Officer of the Year.In a press release Friday, Chief Gerald Lechner named Officer Helen Prosowski as the top cop of1994.Prosowsk? broke the gender barrier when she joined the force in June 1985, but she has never viewed herself in that light.“I knew that I wanted to be a police officer, so I really never viewed myself as breaking the barrier. I am very pleased with theaward,” she said.She feels the interactive natureof the job is the biggest plus forher. •«' : , '“I enjoy being out with the public and having the opportunity to interact with them,” she said.“That’s what police work is all about.”Prosowski came to Sandusky by way of Sheffield Lake, where she was a reserve officer from 1980 to1985. r 'Lechner noted the 42-year-old officer has been very active in many departmental community service activities, including the third grade seat belt program, fourth grade Students Against Vandalism, Cops for Kids, and oth-ers. •. '“I want to help people and do something good for the community and this job is a great way to do that,” she said.A graduate of Lorain Admiral King High School, Lorain Community College, and Baldwin-Wallace College, Prosowski also works on the bicycle and harbor patrols.She is also a certified instructor at the Ohio Peace Officers’ basic training academy, Sandusky.
