WEIBERAll of us are aware, in some measure, of the organized leadership in the community those who serve on governing boards, both in the public and private sector, whose organizations provide many vital services upon which we all depend to protect and improve the quality of our lives.Without these leaders, organizations ranging from churches to charitable foundations would not exist as we knowTheir leadership fosters and nutures the development of institutions and organizations for the betterment of the community. Because their actions directly affect so many, these leaders are highly visible, and we hear, read and see the results of their actions. It is likely that not enough of this type of leadershipexists.The most pervasive leadership in any community is at the grassroots; those who have the vision to recognize an opportunity for service and then take action, perhaps alone, or in small groups, to better the community-These leaders hel thosewithout the means or ability to drive; provide aid to crime victims; aid the sick, shut-ins or the dying; see that the needy eat; volunteer as a school crossing guard or in a hospital; donate money and time to recreational or sports activity; or even play Santa Claus.These are but several of the virtually endless opportunities these leaders perceive. This leadership is direct and often spontaneous service which tends to go unnoticed bv the communi-ty- iIs one type of leadership more valuable than the other, or one leader more valued than the other? A community must have both if its needs are to be properly served. People cannot be members of the community only by taking from it. True membership comes from contributing money, time and talent back int othe community.
