San Clemente will have a hard time .replacing this year’s player of the year.Tif* tSometimes history can happen fast, especially when you aren’t paying attention to it.The only thing Gage ZerboniDAMIANDOTTOREREGISTERWRITER*rrrwanted to do this season was help San Clemente’s boys soccer team sweep the Division 1 championship matches —the CIF Southern Section and Southern California Regionals —for the second time in three seasons.Individual accomplishments and statistics didn’t matter to Zerboni. For him, the team’s success came first. But then he started scoring goals — sometimes four in one game. And he added assists, too. All of a sudden — at least it seemed that way to Zerboni — he had just played the single greatest season in San Clemente school history, at least statistically. The UCLA-bound Zerboni finished the season with 31 goals and 25 assists for 87 points, all school records, and helped the Tritons win a CIF-SS title and play in the Southern California Regional final. For his accomplishments, he has been selected the Register’s boys soccer player of the year.“It all happened so fast. I wasn’t even thinking about records,”nez).”Zerboni broke Martinez’s goals record of 30 set in 2008, but he almost ran out of time. He went three consecutive games without scoring before he knocked in a pass from Bryce Kaminski in the So Cal Regional semifinals to net goal No. 31.He scored six goals overall in the postseason, helping the Tritons march to the CIF-SS Division 1 championship. It didn’t take long for Zerboni to become a marked man, though, with teams building their game plans around stopping the senior forward. But all that did was open another opportunity for him. While he was routinely drawing two defenders as he ran to the end line, his teammates were getting open and scoring goals off Zerbo-ni’s passes.“What is a credit to his versati ity is there weren’t many game where he didn’t either have a got or an assist,” San Clemente coac Mike Pronier said. “The balanc between goals and assists vali dates a quality player because i shows they can find a way to con tribute.”Zerboni got his 18th assist ii the first round of the CIF-SS play offs, breaking Zach Miller’s re cord of 17 set in 2008.In the So Cal Regional semifi nals, he picked up his 25th assist setting up Blayne Martinez’: goal in stoppage time.“You can’t get that many as sists, though, without having ar amazing team beside you,” Zerbo ni said.nCONTACT THE WRITER:ddottore@ocreglster.comlit V2013 ALL-COUNTY BOYS SOCCER TEAMmm vNMa*’fc*.CINOY YAMANAKA, ORANGE COUNTY REGISTERThe All-County boys soccer team: San Clemente coach Mike Pronier, top. At least that is how it would appear from the outside. But San Clemente senior forward Gage Zerboni said the Tritons would not have been able to move forward as a team without Coach Mike Pronier, who has been selected the Register’s coach of the yearfor 2012-13.Pronier doesn’t sleep at night, Zerboni said, so he makes the best of his chronic insomnia to come up with new drills for his players. As a result, the Tritons won their second CIF-SS Division 1 championship in three seasons and finished the season ranked No. 2 in the nation by Maxpreps.“He doesn’t get enough credit for his constant dedication and thought process,” Zerboni said. “It is amazing to see someone sodedicated to what they do that it makes you want to play harder, and be the best you can for him.”San Clemente went undefeated in league, winning all eight games while giving up just two goals.“When I came in and first started coaching, I didn’t want to coach for a few years, I wanted to build something,” Pronier said. “We have had some good years and I am proud of those, but what I am most proud of is the consistency.” |PronierSECOND TEAMLuis Aquayo, Loara, Jr.Jeremy Cser, Yorba Linda, Jr. Alek Cucuk, San Clemente, Jr. Erik Harris, Santa Margarita, Sr. Jesus Ibarra, Kennedy, Sr. Brady Johansen, Esperanza, Sr. Chandler Kirby,Santa Margarita, Jr.Christopher Logan,Orange Lutheran, Sr.Danny Lopez, Godinez, Sr. Blayne Martinez,San Clemente, So.Collin McDermott,San Clemente, Sr.Amirgy Pineda, Century, So.Zac Way, Los Alamitos, Sr.Ivan Zamora, Saddleback, Sr.CINDY YAMANAKA, THE REGISTERSan Clemente's Gage Zerboni set school records for goals (31), assists (25) and points (87).0 ?Zerboni said. “I feel honored to be with the caliber of players likeTom Wiechert and Andy (Marti-
