Tii.ton's Lki-ti ke.—Mr Tilton appeared at Kilgore Hall last night, before a large and appreciative audience, and delivered bis popular lecture on the ••True Theory of Reconstruction.” Not having taken notes, we shall not attempt any extended notice of his effort. To do so would j mar its beauty and detract from its force—nothing short of a full report of the masterly speech would either doMr. Tilton justice or give our readers«anything like a correct understandim*■ mof his powers as an orator. Almost every point taken up, touching this question, was discussed by him with fairness and a perspicuity which but few public speakers practice or attain. For an hour and a half lie held the audience spell-bound, giving a correct | history of the past experience of the Governmentw ith slavery, and showing | dearly that the only permanent foundation upon which to reconstruct the Government, with a view to perma-j nency, peace and prosperity, is that of justice; equality of all citizens before the law, regardless of nationality, race, or color. He made strong issues, and backed them up with strong supports. He spoke against the Constitutional Amendment, endorsed the Military Reconstruction Hill, admonished the people as to the future, to learn wis-| dom from the sad experience of the past, in undertaking to sanction slavery The action of the Ohio Legisla-Hire l ist week in refusing to strike out the word “white” from the Constitution was severely ridiculed In fact | that sage body was the butt of repeated satires, of an amusing character.—I It was compared to the calaboose in i the rear of a train of thirty-seven cars, drawn by the great engine “Radical.” dragged along, the last to come up to the station The impeachment of the President, of which Mr. Tilton is a strong advocate, and the suffrage question were discussed at length, in a very clear and comprehensive manner.
