Tie is no kick for Mater DeiMonarchs share soccer title with W. TorranceBy Jerry RiceThe RegisterCERRITOS — Mater Dei coach Curt Bauer thought the Monarchs had the game in the bag.But the West Torrance Warriors saw it differently, as the two teams battled through regulation and two 10-minute overtimes for a 1-1 outcome and a share of the CIF 4-A Division soccer title Friday night at Gahr High.Unseeded Mater Dei, making its first appearance in the championship game, saw several opportunities for victory slip away late in the contest. The Monarchs’ best opportunity came when they were awarded a penalty kick from 15 yards after the Warriors were called for tripping junior forward John Coggins about two minutes into the first overtime. Paul Oldham, theteam’s leading scorer, was selected for the kick, but his attempt was stopped by goalkeeper Scott Burkett.Mater Dei (25-2-1) had advanced into the final by outshooting South Torrance, 7-6, to decide a scoreless game.“I really thought we would win it when we had the penalty kick, but it didn’t work out that way,” said Bauer.“1 tried to put it in the corner,” said Oldham. “I guess I counted my chickens before they hatched.”West Torrance (23-5), the No. 4 seed, also saw some opportunities slip away.Senior forward Michael Padian watched two attempts in the second half roll to the left of the goal. With the tie, both teams own a share of the title. I neverwant to see a title game decided by penalty kicks,” said Bauer.Contests before the final round tha; end in a tie are decided by penalty kicks.“It’s just not part of the game. It is like deciding a basketball championship with free throws,” he added.Mater Dei received a lucky•bounce for its first score.
