Visited a French town yesterday. The buildings and everything are so queer* They are all of stone and look very old. The streets are crooked and uneven. There are no sidewalks. The farm buildings are built so as to in* close a rectangular lot which serves as a front yard as well as a barn lot. It is nothing unusual to see one room of a building a house and the other a barn. Just a wall between, just outside the front door a large manure pile, and in the midst of all a well. In a village I found a restaurant in one room and a horse barn in the other. The main road generally passes through the barn lot or front yard, I which ever you may call it. There
