After all, he had 43 goals for the season and seven in the playoffs.And when it counted most, he came through. Mendoza scored a crucial goal to lead the Eagles to a 5-2 victory over top-seeded Bishop Montgom ery of Torrance in the Division IV finals on Saturday at La Mirada High.It is the Eagles’ first boys soccer title since 1985.With Estancia (20-1-1) clinging to a 3-2 lead in the second half, Mendoza weaved his way past the Knights defenders and blasted a 30-yard shot into the top right corner of the goal for a 4-2 lead in the 51st minute.It was the second of three goals for Mendoza, who finishes the season with a county-best 46 goals.“I was really pumped up to score,” Mendoza said. I just couldn’t let my team down.”Estancia coach Steve Crenshaw said he knew he couldexpect big things from the se-mor forward“He is one of the best players around and the most phenomenal talent in Orange County,” he said. “There is not a single player who can match him.”Eagles midfielder Jorge Lopez got a red card near the end of the first half, forcing Estancia to play a man short the rest of the game.Immediately after the red card was issued, Michael Jimenez scored off a header just before the end of the half to make the score 3-1.A minute into the second half, Paul Leach dribbled through four Estancia defenders in front of the goal and dished the ball to J.R. Lang, who connected on the goal tomake it 3-2.We got a little bit tentative(after going a man down),”Estancia coach Steve Crenshaw said. “We had to play defensive soccer, which is not our sty to.When the second half started, we had to start attacking again and keep going at them. Once we start attacking, we will score a goal.”The Knights (21-3-3) had good scoring opportunities in the first 20 minutes, but Estancia got some breaks. In the 11th minute, Matt Blanco had a Wide-open shot, but Eaglesgoalie Hilario Arriaga barely tipped the ball from a prone position and sent it rollingwide right.Estancia struck first, scoring goals in the 23rd and 24th minutes. John Alderete scored off a throw-in for the first goal, and Cesar Terrones had the second after dribbling past a Knights defender to score.
